The average LEED project is about 150,000 square feet (reflecting the nature of LEED projects in general, large commercial or public sectors). The USGBC also states that the average project cost is approx. $ 250 square feet. This results in an average project amount of $ 38 million per project. In 2006, in nearly 1,700 LEED certified projects, the total green building market – through LEED's objective – approaches $ 65 billion. Of course, USGBC data also includes building costs, including a lot more than building materials, not to mention the core product categories that are the main elements of the report.
The general rule for commercial construction projects is that it accounts for about 45% of all project costs. Assuming that at least one third of these materials have met the LEED credits or otherwise green, then over 15% of the total project costs were green raw materials. This is about a $ 10 billion LEED centric green raw material market. If we raise this number by 50% to the non-LEED green-based sales account, we will bring a total value of $ 15 billion for 2006 – roughly optimistic estimates and a reasonable green resource universe for the $ 2.2 billion subset in the report materials discussed.
Virtually any existing part of a commercial or residential building could be replaced by a substitution that is reliably green compared to existing technology.
The fact that the green product is above its predecessor for energy efficiency, recycled content, recycling ability, health care or any other criterion, the fact that the green market is theoretically nearly the same size as the existing, green market.
Although this process has certainly begun with many materials and technologies, we can not reach each one in a single report, but focus on several major categories of building elements where the mere quantity and value of the materials requires attention. Each of the product segments listed below is a target for green alternatives, as each of them represents a significant source for building materials distributors, green or otherwise.
Focusing on these major categories, we can gain insight into other complementary product categories that can be traced and trended along with leading product segments.
